Illinois draws a sharp distinction between hospitals and private practices. Hospitals must retain patient records for not less than ten years, and where an attorney has given written notice of pending litigation before that period expires, the record must be kept until the matter concludes or for twelve years from production, whichever comes first. There is no Illinois statute setting a retention period for private physician offices, so practices follow professional guidance rather than a statutory minimum. X-ray films held by hospitals carry a separate five-year requirement.
