How legal transcription works
Legal transcription is judged on whether the record can be relied on. A transcript used for case preparation, discovery review, or internal notes needs accurate speaker attribution, verbatim treatment of what was actually said, and consistent formatting that a reviewer can navigate months later.
We transcribe with AI and then have a human reviewer verify the transcript against the audio, paying particular attention to speaker changes, crosstalk, names, figures, and citations - the places where automated output most often fails quietly. Transcripts are returned with numbered lines and speaker labels by default.
An important distinction: a transcript prepared for internal use is not the same as a certified transcript for filing. Requirements for certified transcripts vary by state and by court, and in many jurisdictions only a licensed court reporter may certify one. Where your matter requires a certified transcript, we work with certified local reporters in that jurisdiction rather than pretending our own output satisfies the rule.

Are AI-generated transcripts admissible in court?
Admissibility and certification are separate questions from accuracy, and they vary by jurisdiction. Many courts require a transcript to be prepared and certified by a licensed court reporter to serve as the official record. In California, for example, the reporter must certify each transcript as correct and list their CSR number on both the cover page and the certificate. Our transcripts are well suited to case preparation, discovery review, and internal use; where a certified official transcript is required, we work with certified reporters licensed in that jurisdiction.
How much does legal transcription cost?
Audio is $1.75 per minute on 4-day standard turnaround, $2.50 for 48-hour rush, and $3.50 for 24-hour same day. Multi-speaker recordings with crosstalk are quoted at the difficult-audio rate from $2.25 per minute. A $25 minimum applies.
Do you transcribe multi-speaker depositions?
Yes, and speaker identification is where automated-only transcription most often falls down. A human reviewer verifies every speaker change against the audio, because a transcript that attributes testimony to the wrong person is worse than no transcript.
Can you handle confidential and privileged material?
Files are encrypted in transit and at rest, access is logged, and material is not used to train any model. If your matter requires a confidentiality agreement before files are shared, we will sign one.
