What Massachusetts requires

Medical records

Massachusetts physicians must keep adult patient records for at least seven years from the last patient encounter. For a patient who was a minor at that last visit, records are kept for seven years or until the patient turns 18, whichever is longer. The obligation is unusually persistent: it follows the licensee regardless of status, including physicians who have retired, let a licence lapse, or had one suspended or revoked. Where a physician has died, the executor or administrator of the estate carries the same seven-year duty.
