Medical records
Minnesota imposes the most demanding retention duty of any state we have reviewed: the portions of a hospital record that the commissioner of health has defined as the individual permanent medical record must be kept permanently, not for a fixed number of years. The commissioner enumerates by rule what that core record must contain, including identification data and medical history. Remaining portions - miscellaneous documents, papers, and correspondence - may be destroyed after seven years. Records of minors are held for seven years following the age of majority.
