North Carolina is unusual in maintaining a formal state-approved transcriptionist list. The Administrative Office of the Courts publishes an alphabetical roster of people authorised to prepare transcripts in any county, covering both electronic recordings made by district court clerks and records kept by official superior court reporters. Approval requires AAERT Certified Electronic Transcriber credentials plus two years of court or deposition experience, or completion of an accepted court transcription programme plus five years experience, followed by AOC training and a transcriptionist test. Official superior court reporters must additionally hold the Registered Professional Reporter credential.
