What New York requires

Court transcripts

New York court reporters are licensed by the State Education Department and must pass both a written knowledge test and the skills sections of the Registered Professional Reporter examination. Transcript formatting follows the Uniform Rules for the New York State Trial Courts, including a 25-line page. Under CPLR 5525, where the appellant has timely proposed amendments and the respondent raises no objection in time, a transcript certified as correct by the reporter is deemed correct without a further stipulation or settlement by the judge. Reporters must retain stenographic notes for at least ten years.

  • 22 NYCRR (Uniform Rules for the NYS Trial Courts - transcript format)
  • N.Y. C.P.L.R. R. 5525 (preparation and settlement of transcript)
