Court transcripts
Washington prohibits anyone representing themselves as a court reporter without first obtaining a certificate from the Department of Licensing. Certification comes through a state-recognised examination, NCRA or National Stenomask Verbatim Reporters Association credentials, or reciprocity from another state, and the state exam requires 95 percent accuracy. Washington also sets explicit retention periods for the underlying record rather than only the transcript: transcribed notes must be kept at least three years, and untranscribed notes at least ten years or longer where a statute requires it.
